MARIMEKKO

Marimekko was recently introduced to me by my soon to be mother in law.

It was love at first sight.

Marimekko is a company that designs and creates some of the most bold, yet simple patterns I have seen.

Ian and I were blessed to be given an assortment of Marimekko dinnerware at our wedding shower in Minneapolis.

Now, after seeing the collection at Crate and Barrel, our obsession has begun.

finishing touches...

gold say yes ''mrs'' necklace by Kate Spade
Jewelry.

The finishing touch.

Today I found the perfect piece for my wedding day.

I know the earrings I will be wearing-the rough cut diamond studs Ian bought me for my birthday, and of course I know the rings I will be wearing, but now knowing the necklace...
it just made it real.

BIRTHDAY WISHES!

I love birthdays.
They are carefree, fun, full of hugs and good food.

In the past few years, I haven't made much of a fuss over my birthday, but this year, however, I decided to celebrate.

That being said, I had no idea that my amazing co-workers had made the same decision. When I arrived to work on Saturday and walked upstairs to clock in, I was surprised by a decorated stock room,  a home cooked meal, chocolate cake, KATE SPADE knee high socks!!!, Coco Bella chocolates, and an over-sized card that made me feel loved!

Truly the best way to kick off a birthday weekend!

STATE FAIR!!!

my lovely fiancee with a pork chop on a stick
The Minnesota State Fair is not only the largest State Fair in the country, it also has the largest selection of fried food on a stick.

deep fried milkyway bars

Whether your pleasure is fruit salad or barbecued ribs, the Minnesota State Fair has it, made to ordered, battered, and served on a skewer.

Of course there is more to the State Fair than food, the Miracle of Birth Center definitely highlighted my day. Seeing a momma cow nudge her newborn calf in attempts to get him to stand for the first time honestly took my breath away. Watching the piglets however, killed my desire for chocolate covered bacon on a stick, but then again there are worse things than remembering where things, like your snack, come from.

And of course there are the rides...their presence is undoubtedly essential at a fair. The anticipation and excitement they create forces you, even for a moment, to stay young, carefree and silly.

a part of something

This weekend, I was lucky enough to go to Minneapolis with my mother and fiancee for a weekend full of love, good food, laughter, and simplicity. It would be an understatement to say that the wedding shower/reception at my fiancee's parents home was amazing-it was perfect. Half way through introductions, food, hugs and chit-chat my fiancee's cousin gave me two of the most beautiful gifts I could have imagined.
The first was art. Art I could wear!
That being said, the set she presented to me were more than just perfectly crafted acrylic earrings. Whether or not she knew, when she gave me the earrings she also gave a materialized sense of belonging.

When I put the earrings on and looked in the mirror I began to realize that so many of the amazing women in the family I would soon be joining were wearing a piece made by Tia. It was in that moment that I realized how lucky I am. I have the most brilliant and loving mother a girl could ask for, a man who inspires me everyday, and a clan of Minnesotans who just make me smile. It doesn't get much better than that.

the little things

today was the perfect day.
great mood upon waking.
delightful breakfast.
breathtaking weather.
and then a little surprise waiting for me at work...
My truly darling co-worker brought me a pair of tory burch flip flops...I should probably mention that I LOVE flip flops and seeing as how I am about to go on a long weekend to Minneapolis, where it actually feels like summer, these will be put to great use!

its the little things, like knowing that someone thought of you, that brighten your day

a dream soon realized

Tonight is the night that Ian, my mum and I hop on the Red-eye to Minneapolis-I could not be happier.
Its funny thinking that we almost didn't go. Not because we couldn't, but simply because we didn't realize how much we needed to.
Ian and I have been busy with wedding planning and we honestly didn't even think about going back to Minneapolis to celebrate our wedding.
It wasn't until Debbie, Ian's momma, mentioned that it might be fun if we had a lil' party at their home so that the whole Hanka family in Minnesota could celebrate with us.
When she mentioned the idea Ian and I were in immediate agreement-we had to go!
Plans for the weekend so far include state fair (I gotta get my hands on some chocolate covered bacon-on a stick), church basement style engagement party, breakfast with the Hanka's, and COCONUT CAKE!
This cake is quite possibly the best cake I have ever had.
It is composed of a light and airy cake layered with a caramel butter cream frosting topped with shredded coconut and dusted with cinnamon. It is perfection, and it can only be found at French Meadow Bakery in Minneapolis-unless your absolutely amazing soon to be mother in law orders a sheet cake version for your engagement party...
More details to come!!!

Pluots

It is always a magical time of year when I am reunited with one of my favorite hybrid fruits.
If you haven't tried one this season-make a point to pick one up ASAP.

A pluot (play /ˈpl.ɒt/)[1] is a tradename for varieties of interspecific plum or plumcot developed in the late 20th century by Floyd Zaiger.[2][3] "Pluot" is a registered trademark of Zaiger's Genetics. Like the aprium, it is a complex cross hybrid of plum and apricot. The pluot exhibits more plum-like traits than the aprium,[4] and is also called an interspecific or IS plum.
The fruit's exterior has smooth skin closely resembling that of a plum. Pluots are noted for their sweetness, their intense flavor, and very juicy pulp. Pluots are also rich in vitamin A.

people watching...

This Union Square landmark is the subject of many photos...
Call it creepy, call it artistic, but there is something undeniably interesting about watching people take photos. From the decision to capture a moment to the analysis of the final image...
All I know is that people watching in Union Square is makes for a wonderful lunch break activity.

always on my mind...

You know those days, when you are really and truly just window shopping, and then all of a sudden a piece steals your heart. That is exactly what happened to me when I walked in Revolver on Fillmore, over a week ago.

The piece that has taken over my thoughts is the LA MADE Zoe Leather Jacket. It is simple and feminine, with the perfect touch of edge. When I tried the jacket on I knew I was making a mistake...I had just purchased a pair of Cynthia Vincent wedges, and I was hesitant on putting another large purchase on my credit card. Being that the jacket, size small, was a touch to big  I thought I would be able to walk away in peace.

Then it began. The desire. The justification. The need. I was a slave to this jacket.

So, I called Revolver and asked them if they could order an extra small.
Denied.

So, I went online.
Success!

Only now, I am not as sure as before. My interest in the jacket hasn't vanished, but is simply something I question. Why? I loved it. I couldn't stop thinking about it. For whoevers sake, I had a dream about the damn thing.
Maybe its because all of a sudden I can have it. Now that it is attainable it's lost its luster.

All I know is that until I'm certain, it will have to wait for me in the cold, unpersonable, over stocked warehouse.

let the count down begin

Walking into Walgreen's today I saw the comforting reminder that October, my favorite month, is right around the corner.

I know it might seem juvinelle, but I always get giddy at the sight of a seasonal take on a year round delicacy.

Standing amidst the Halloween themed candy with a ridiculously large smile across my face, I realized that the count down to, arguably, the most beautiful month of the year had begun.

the first fitting...

Who doesn't love pockets!?!
I know its been said, but when I tried this dress on, I knew that it would be the one I married the love of my life in.

I should probably mention that I knew this was the dress long before the proposal...I had been virtually stalking this particular dress for a year.

So, when I first got engaged I went to the bridal shop that first listed the dress online and told them which dress I wanted. Knowing I meant business, they had the dress driven up from the San Jose boutique and the next day it was purchased.

The shoes however took a little bit more work to find, but when I laid eyes on the aqua Kate Spade pumps I knew the search was over...when I found out the pearl top flats where on sale, I took it as a sign.

After all, no one wants to have sore feet on their wedding day, having an alternate pair of shoes is completely necessary.

the power of suggestion

For those who know me, it is common knowledge that I am a shopper. I love it. The entire experience. I love being genuinely greeted, attended to, and SOLD to!
To me shopping is more than purchasing an item I need. Shopping is about discovery, and for me this discovery cannot happen without a guide. Simply put-I go into a store to get service, if I wanted to shop alone I would have just stayed in bed and ordered online.
On my last shopping trip, I was on a mission, a mission to find the perfect shoe for my wedding reception dress.
So, here I am, standing hopelessly in the midst of every type of shoe one could think of, alone, and in panic.

I walked up to the counter and one of the sales associates greeted me and asked me if she could help me. It was then that I began telling her my life story. I'm not sure why, but for some reason my vulnerability made me talkative. I explained the reception-Minneapolis, church basement style potluck in the middle of the day with all of my fiances family. I then went into how I was nervous I wouldn't find the right shoe for this dress, because
1. I didn't know what I wanted and
2. I needed to be able to wear it to work-mind you I wear mute colored sweaters and denim to work everyday and this particular dress is a Grecian inspired pleated silk maxi dress-she had her work cut out for her.

She calmly took me around to various shoes and I immediately spotted a pair of red pointed toe heels-it was love. I slipped on the floor model and they looked perfect with my jeans. She smiled knowingly and sent me to try on my dress. I knew that they were a shot in the dark-I mean red pointed toed heels with a silk gown? Yet there was something charming about the idea of a pop of color amidst layers of silk.
Upon putting on the ensemble I caught myself tearing up. I felt beautiful. I felt like a bride. I felt like me.

I composed myself and walked out of the fitting room to find that my lovely associate had to help another client, so instead I got the manager. She instantly said, those are cute, but totally wrong for your dress. Perhaps I was too composed or she took my smeared mascara to mean that the shoes had horrified me to tears, but either way I was crushed and as much as I hate to say it, embarrassed.
Had my instints taken me to a place that simply didn't make sense?

I quickly looked for a second opinion. Then another associate stepped in and brought me an assortment of satin strappy sandals. My heart began to pound-I HATE SATIN SANDALS.
I humored the two woman and listened to their thoughts-until I realized they had yet to ask me what I wanted. They never once asked me how I wanted to look or feel. It was then that I got my courage back and asked if Bridget, my previous associate, was free yet. She wasn't, so I waited.
During the waiting period my mother came storming onto the sales floor to save the day. As my mother approached, Bridget followed and they both promptly asked my thoughts.
I could feel myself tear up again, I told them, I felt perfect.
They both looked at each other, and without even speaking went to the register with the red shoes. Mission completed.

I left the store feeling exhausted, yet at ease. Then I realized that I was so close to falling victim to the power of suggestion. The other women simply saw the dress, and offered advice based on the way they would complete the outfit. This got me thinking, how many purchases have I made based soley on the suggestion of the sales associate verses its effect on my life? I guess the lesson learned here is when making an emotional purchase, be sure to have those who understand your emotions be your guide.

hiding in plain sight

No matter where the day takes me, whether it is chaotic or mundane, I know that the trip to the Jeanine Payer shop on Market St. will bring me back to a place of inspiration.

Hidden among the busy streets and over-sized chains in downtown San Francisco, the shop is easy to pass by, but worth turning around for.

Jeanine Payer's work is elegance in its purest form. Every piece is unique in its sculpture and the majority have a perfectly chosen quote engraved to complete the emotions they evoke.

I have been blessed to have marked my milestones with Jeanine Payer's jewelry, from a necklace given to me by my mother upon graduating High School, to the wedding bands that symbolize my unconditional love and commitment to my fiancee.

When describing her work Jeanine says,
"I believe in pieces having a wonder about them. I like making things that are at once both powerful and private", which is exactly what she achieves with each and every piece.

Simply put, Jeanine Payer makes art. Art that you can wear. Art that every day will inspire you and all those who catch a glimpse. If you find yourself, as I often do, in need of a break from the pressures of day to day life, pop into this little nook on Market St. and let yourself be taken away.

WHIMSY

I'm not sure why, but for some reason, for as long as I can remember I have adored the word whimsy.
I love saying it, spelling it, observing it and feeling it. Its hopeful, luxurious, curious, and just plain darling.
I think it might have something to do with the fact that I crave structure. I love when everything goes according to plan. I like knowing the end result before I go on the journey.
That being said, there is nothing more undesirable than a life planned out. The beauty is in the unplanned, the imperfections, and willingness to let spontaneity take the lead.
Its true, we need a balance between the mundane and excitement, but I also think its more fun with a pinch of whimsy.

whim·sy

"whimsy pronunciation"[hwim-zee, wim-]
noun, plural -sies.
1.
capricious humor or disposition; extravagant, fanciful, or excessively playful expression: a play with lots of whimsy.
2.
an odd or fanciful notion.
3.
anything odd or fanciful; a product of playful or capricious fancy: a whimsy from an otherwise thoughtful writer.
